Business Continuity Plans - Are you prepared?

In 2008, more than 2 million of Houston's population was without power after Hurricane Ike. Employees were displaced from their homes, roads were closed, and availability to basic daily needs were limited.  Many businesses had to determine how to continue to do business in a less than ideal situation.

Companies that had prepared for such disruption were able to continue operating.  For those that were not prepared, the situation negatively affected their bottom line, customer relationships, and overall business performance. It is becoming imperative that Businesses prepare for natural or man-made disasters to insure viability.

Companies must:

  • Identify critical business processes that are necessary for continued operation of your business
  • Identify alternate locations where critical business processes can be recovered
  • Identify recovery time objectives for each critical process
  • Identify equipment, software, vital records, off-site storage, key vendors and supplier requirements required to recover each critical process
  • Develop detailed checklists for the response and assign personnel to complete these actions
  • Develop a response team organization chart with current and alternate contact information, and predefined roles and responsibilities
  • Track staff relocation requirements, including name, department, title, function code, home address, type of PC (PC or Laptop), number of adults and children in immediate family, pets /other, relocation priority, recovery location or facility, relocation seat number/room assignment, alternate employees, and special needs
  • Manage your program by periodically reviewing and updating critical business processes, recovery factors, and personnel contact information
