Here's a video of FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate announcing the formation of FEMA Corps, a partnership between FEMA and the Corporation for National and Community Service. FEMA Corps is a FEMA-devoted unit of 1600 service corps members within AmeriCorps solely devoted to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.

FEMA responded to a record setting number of disasters in 2011. They also began work on the National Preparedness Goal, a national plan for disaster preparedness and response. Those highlights are among the accomplishments found in the 2012 State of FEMA report. The document also tries to communicate all the work that FEMA does.

Continuity Insights has a description of FEMA's National Preparedness System. Required by Presidential Policy Directive (PPD-8): National Preparedness, the system is intended to strengthen the nation’s resilience against all threats and hazards, including terrorism, cyber attacks, pandemics and catastrophic natural disasters.
Components of the National Preparedness System:
- Identifying and assessing risks
- Estimating capability requirements
- Building or sustaining capabilities
- Developing and implementing plans to deliver those capabilities
- Validating and monitoring progress made towards achieving the National Preparedness Goal
- Reviewing and updating efforts as needed to promote continuous improvement.
Implementation of the National Preparedness System is a multi-year effort being coordinated by FEMA.
